- What is an Herbal Extract?
- It's just that! A concentrated liquid extract made by soaking plant material in a carrier liquid which draws out the beneficial and active compounds
- What liquid can I use to extract herbs?
- Vodka: This is the most shelf stable option. It will last indefinitely. It will extract the most out of your herbs.
- Vegetable Glycerin: This is a great option if you do not want to use alcohol. However, it is a weaker solvent so your extract will not be as potent as with alcohol.
- Vinegar: This is a good alternative to using alcohol; however, it will lose potency faster. Apple cider vinegar is preferred as it also has other health benefits. Any food grade vinegar will work. This could have a shelf life of 6 months to a year.
- How do I know if the extract is spoiled?
- There are a few key things to look for: a sour or putred smell, if the liquid suddenly becomes cloudy after not being disturbed for several days. If the sediment at the bottom becomes clumpy or there are signs of mold. (This is why vodka is the most recommended extract liquid because it is highly unlikely for any spoilage to occur)
- Can you take too much of the extract?
- Yes! The recommended dosage is 1-2 droppers up to 3 times a day. Keep in mind that each person can react differently to the herbs included, so start slow and work up to more.
- Are they safe for children?
- Yes. If you are uncomfortable with your child using an alcohol based extract, we recommend using a glycerin base as this will make it more palatable for them.
- Can I use herbal extracts while taking medication?
- It is always recommended to consult with your physcian before using herbal extracts while on medication
- Are there any side effects to using herbal extracts?
- Side effects can occur if you are allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients. Check ingredient list on the label before using. Interactions with medication can occur. If there is concern, consult with your physician before using.
